Robert O’Callaghan’s evocative Rockford Basket Press Shiraz is a tribute to the Barossa’s 19th and early 20th-century heritage. Made from grapes sourced from 60 to 140-year-old dry-grown vineyards (most from independent growers) across a range of Barossa soils, altitudes and micro-climates, the wine represents a rare and important post-colonial Australian aesthetic.

Perhaps more than any other wine, Basket Press Shiraz represents the style of wine Rockford makes. It draws heavily on the wisdom and shared knowledge of previous generations of Australian winemakers and recognises that at the heart of every great wine are great vineyards. Basket Press Shiraz is made using equipment from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, before aging in seasoned American and French hogsheads for two years and eventually being bottled under the highest quality cork. This approach enables the winery to make the kind of traditional, soft, deeply coloured, earthy Australian red wine that Robert O’Callaghan first became fascinated by as a budding winemaker in the 1960s.

Red and black fruit, a little walnut, some vanilla/cedar oak, and rosy perfume. It falls more to medium-bodied, has freshness, nutty and savoury flavours, but with the brightness of fruit. Tannin offers a gentle grip and graininess, and the finish has fragrance and good length. A very good release. Classic Rockford style. Good to see. – Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
